Warmer Weather Means more Time Outside—and More Exposure to Parasites

As the days get longer and the weather warms up, we all start spending more time outdoors—including our pets. Spring in our area brings blooming flowers, greener grass… and an increase in parasites like mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks. At Turkey Creek Animal Hospital, we want to make sure your pet stays healthy, comfortable, and protected all season long. That’s why spring is the perfect time to talk about preventives.

Heartworm: One Bite Is All It Takes

Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitoes, and it only takes one bite from an infected mosquito to put your dog—or even your cat—at risk. Once inside the body, heartworms grow and live in the heart and lungs, causing damage that can be life-threatening.

The challenging part? Many pets show no symptoms until the disease is advanced. Treatment for dogs is costly and can be hard on their bodies. For cats, there is no approved treatment once infected. The good news is that heartworm disease is almost entirely preventable with consistent monthly prevention or long-acting options recommended by your veterinarian. If your pet isn’t currently on prevention—or if you’ve missed doses—now is the time to get back on track.

Fleas: More Than Just an Itch

Fleas are not just a nuisance. They can cause:

  • Intense itching and skin infections
  • Flea allergy dermatitis
  • Tapeworm infections
  • Anemia in severe cases

Once fleas enter your home, they multiply quickly and can be difficult (and expensive) to eliminate. Preventing fleas before they become a problem is far easier than treating an infestation.

Ticks: Small Bite, Big Risks

Ticks are commonly found in wooded areas, tall grass, and even in our own backyards. They can transmit serious diseases, including Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses that affect both pets and people.

Because ticks can attach and feed before you ever see them, preventive medications are an essential layer of protection—especially during peak spring and summer months.

Prevention Is Easier Than Treatment

We know it can feel like “just one more thing” to remember—but parasite prevention is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your pet’s long-term health.

At Turkey Creek Animal Hospital, we’ll help you choose the safest and most effective heartworm, flea, and tick preventives based on your pet’s age, lifestyle, and health history. Whether your pet loves hiking trails or prefers sunbathing on the patio, protection matters.

If you have questions about your pet’s current prevention plan—or need to refill or restart medication—give us a call at 813-752-1010. Our team is here to help you make this spring a healthy one for your entire family.
